The Helm of Awe is a symbol of power in warfare, capable of instilling terror in others while helping the wearer stay calm under pressure. The symbols were created by fusing the runes that comprised the Old Viking alphabet, and the ring features a runic alphabet known to be used by the Vikings. Runic signs were once carved on cups, amulets, and rings, on the front of houses, and at the bow of Viking ships. In Norse history, the runes were carved into rune stones to mark the graves of heroes. Anyone who wears these signs in war will be safe; nevertheless, this ring may be worn anywhere and on any occasion.
